It Gets Better

By on January 12, 2011

NFL star, Kenny McKinley was only 23-years-old when he shot himself. Little Carl Joseph Walker was only eleven when he ended his life. And Joseph Jefferson was just twenty-six years young when he killed himself. Each of these promising young men committed suicide. Black males have historically suffered poor health outcomes influenced by social disparities, now for whatever reason, suicide attempts by black males are increasing as well. This disturbing trend requires each of us to be alert and attentive when we see signs of self-harm. Do you know what they are?

Signs of suicidal ideation:

  • Talking about wanting to harm or kill yourself
  • Making a plan to kill yourself (e.g. buying a gun, pills, etc.)
  • Giving away personal possessions out of the blue
  • Isolating self from others
  • Unusual talking or writing about death, dying, or suicide

If you or someone you know needs to speak to a professional anonymously. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), a free, 24-hour hotline available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Your call will be routed to the nearest crisis center to you.
