Urban Living Can Really Hurt You

By on January 12, 2011

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that occurs after a traumatic event like war, the attacks of September 11th, or the recent mass shooting in Tucson, AZ.  According to a 2008 research study published in the Journal of Urban Health, African Americans who live in urban economically disadvantaged areas experience higher rates of trauma and PTSD than the general population. It’s not simply the fact of residing in an urban area that brings about PTSD, it’s the associated violence, aggression, and other environmental threats. Reasonably this means that residents in Detroit, Chicago, New York, DC, and other urban centers may be pre-disposed to declines in mental and physical health. Stay tuned for research findings on what it means to live in the suburbs.
