iPhone 5

For ‘iPhone addicts’ everywhere Friday, September 15th is akin to a holiday with the availability of the new iPhone 5 by Apple. Sales of the new iPhone 5 are expected to do pretty well, possibly double the previous model in its first week on the market. This is mostly due to Apple’s most aggressive smartphone launch plan yet.

The iPhone 5 sports a 4-inch “retina” screen that displays a sharper image. It can run on high-speed 4G LTE wireless networks and is 20% lighter than the previous iPhone 4S.  The device is Apple’s first mobile handset that uses new “LTE” wireless networks. And in case you were wondering, ‘LTE’ refers to “Long-Term Evolution,” or in industry jargon, the latest and fastest way to transmit data from cellular towers to phones and other gadgets. It’s one of two so-called “fourth-generation,” or 4G, wireless technologies that have been deployed by various phone companies. So in actuality, the iPhone 4S that was touted as being on AT&T’s 4G network- was really on the 3G network. Were we deceived?

“While it lacked the mind-blowing innovation we have come to expect of Apple, (it) is differentiated enough to maintain a sizable product advantage over its competitors,” said FBR Capital markets, the brokerage that is forecasting Apple’s shares of stock to hit $1,000 within the next year.

The arrival of the iPhone 5 will push the price of prior models like the iPhone 4S down, starting at $99 with 2-year agreement.  Apple is planning a quick roll out the new model around the world, expect to see those familiar lines around the block at your local retailer. Yep, those are iPhone folks.

Even those of us familiar with the iPhone of yesteryear, it’s stunning that a phone so thin offers so many features, including a faster chip, the latest wireless technology, an 8MP iSight camera, and a beautiful aluminum body designed and made with precision. The iPhone 5 measures 7.6 millimeters thin and weighs just 112 grams. That’s 18% thinner and 20% lighter than iPhone 4S. But be your judge and compare the new kid on the block with its Android and other competitors.
