Real Husbands of Hollywood

By on January 15, 2013

Move over NeNe, here come the Real Husbands of Hollywood.

Make no mistake, however, there is very little that is “real” about this show—that is, except for the comedy. It is hilarious from start to end. Funnyman Kevin Hart is the creator, producer and star who is joined by Boris Kodjoe, Duane Martin, J.B. Smoove, Nick Cannon, and Robin Thicke. The Real Husbands of Hollywood is both scripted and improvised as a parody of the “Real Housewives” reality series.

Put together, these guys will surely make for a side-splittingly hilarious satire. And it’s not just the reality TV concept that’s subject to being made fun of. These real husbands will also be taking blows from each other and even make fun of themselves. You can expect to see joke after joke referring to the real-life situations of the men, such as Nick Cannon’s and Mariah Carey’s (in)famous marriage.

But does reality television threaten scripted roles for actors. The New York Times printed an article by Jon Caramanica, titled “Black and Famous but Out to Pasture”, it asserts a larger statement is being made about the demise of the black male lead on television since the advent of reality television.

In fact, I got a similar impression just from watching one of the promos at a movie theatre. In it, Nick Cannon acts frustrated while saying “BET ain’t got enough money to pay me!” even though we all know it’s been a while since he’s had a significant acting role.

Real Husbands of Hollywood premieres Tuesday, January 15, 2013 on BET at 10 Pacific/9 Central.
