Is Multi-Tasking Healthy?
Human multi-tasking is the performance by an individual of appearing to handle more than one task at the same time according to Wikipedia. It may not even be healthy as you place yourself in stressful and even dangerous situations. There is significant research that negates the concept of multi-tasking, as it only allows you to use half your brain at a certain point. Half your brain, imagine that! It seems that while the human brain can indeed manage one or two things at a time but maybe not three or four. Are you a multi-tasker? Be honest.
Another name for this is “Super-tasking,” the ability to juggle simultaneous tasks without experiencing a drop in attention or focus, like driving and using the cell phone or texting. But isn’t that illegal in most states anyway? This world we live in requires us to be able to do a lot of things in a short time span, whether it’s overseeing a household, a corporation, a sports team, or a nation. This got us to thinking about some of the most famous multi-taskers we know.
There’s the mother of all media, Oprah Winfrey. Besides the daily talk show, there’s a radio show, a popular magazine, a school for girls in South Africa and oh yeah, and entire television network. But she’s letting go of the talk show after 25 years this season, nobody likes a quitter. I mean really Oprah, you just gotta be more ambitious.
You have to recognize President Obama as a Super-tasker! I mean since his worldwind 2.5 years campaigning for a job that now seems thankless, he’s showing more snow on the rooftop if you catch my drift. The 44th president seized his role amidst a failing U.S. economy, record bankruptcies and home foreclosures. As any legendary Supertasker, in his first two years in office he not only rescued the economy from a deep depression. The president also bailed out the auto industry and even picked up where Bush left off with helping the banks. But that was’nt all, he beefed up the Hate Crimes law to include sexual orientation, implemented the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010, brought combat troops home from Iraq, got two Supreme Court Justices confirmed, got BP to establish a 20 billion dollar compensation fund, ditched DADT, addressed the nation after the Tucscon, AZ tragedy, and overall re-established the United States standing in the world. Even as this is published, Obama is dealing with the Middle East, addressing the economy via the business community, and still manages to remember his wife’s birthday. Whew! Ladies and gentleman, the award for “Super-tasking” has to go to President Barack Obama.
