Kiwis Better Than Apples
Move over Apples, we’re now keen on Kiwis!
Kiwis, a native fruit of New Zealand may be a smaller fruit, but they are packed to the core with nutritional contents in their juicy green flesh; like Lutein, a powerful antioxidant which is thought to be one of the active components in the fruit that reduces blood pressure. So it’s three kiwis a day to keep the doctor away.
Researchers from Oslo University Hospital in Norway point to lutein as having benefits, cardiologists will remind you there is no magic bullet to take care of a person’s heart health; it’s more a question of a healthy lifestyle with a good diet and exercise. Kiwis to their benefit can make up one of the recommended five a day servings of fruit and vegetables shown to improve health in the long run.
While kiwis may not be as accessible as an apple, researchers conclude that indeed “three kiwi a day improved 24-hour blood pressure more than an apple a day.” This is good health news. The new study may help to do for kiwis what a previous study did for red wine, which is also known to have positive benefits for the heart. Of course all of this information comes with a caution of moderation and balance.
The promising results were done with still a relatively small sample. And if you prefer kiwi over apples, it’s a good day for you. Overall, heart patients should not cease taking their medications and should consult their physician before making any major dietary changes.
