We are excited to announce that addition of Denver, Colorado native, Brandon Brooks a graduate student at Drexel University’s School of Public Health, concentrating in Health Management and Policy.
Brandon is working toward a career in health disparities research, an area close to him as he’s personally worked with disenfranchised communities. Specifically, he’s interested in addressing the systemic barriers to healthier outcomes including lack of access to quality healthcare resources and insurance, health literacy, interventions, etc. So it makes perfect sense for a guy of his caliber and passion to join Healthyblackmen.org.
With a bright career in front of him, Brandon has already done great work with Dr. Loni Tabb to examine the spatial and spatio-temporal distribution of alcohol related violence in the cities of Philadelphia and Seattle. The project analyzed how factors such as low socioeconomic status and lack of social cohesion in locations with high rates of alcohol outlets contributed to increased rates of violence.
Mr. Brooks currently works as a research assistant at the Drexel University School of Public Health’s Department of Community Health and Prevention working with Dr. Ann Klassen researching smoking patterns in Philadelphia Housing Authority residents.
He says, “I believe that with the right combination of public health interventions, community empowerment, more equal access and health education, there can be a significant decrease in adverse health outcomes in our communities.”
While nearly no one enters the field of public health for fame and fortune, Brandon has a passion and is committed to advancing African American health and we believe he will be one of the future leaders to change the world. And that’s why we’re excited to have him aboard. Look for articles and insight from Brandon right here and in our newsletter.
