Mobile App Reports STI Results
There’s an app that allows you to receive and share your latest sexually transmitted disease and HIV testing results. The app, which is already being used across the United States, and is available for free download in Apple’s App Store.
It’s called Healthvana and it reports positive results for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV negative results. An HIV positive result, smartly, still requires the doctor to deliver the news personally. But this mobile app is catching on.
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has been piloting Healthvana in three testing locations, and the app has proven popular, with 66% of patients using it to check their results. According to Healthvana, by comparison, only 5% of consumers access their patient information online.
Healthvana is HIPAA compliant and claims to use “industry-leading security and privacy measures.”
A PR representative for the company amusingly told us that founder and CEO Ramin Bastani “is often referred to as the safest man in America to have sex with given how many times he has been tested in his quest to provide consumers access to their sexual health test results.”
“Currently, healthcare providers have to legally call patients who tested positive. However, many patients aren’t reached and don’t know they need treatment,” said Bastani. “Now, every patient receives their lab results within a few days… I truly believe this will slow the spread of STDs and reduce patient anxiety.”
Because it’s an app, the results are sharabale with your partners. I don’t know how I’d react to a “You’ve probably got gonorrhea!” message from a partner, but I’d probably be glad I knew, for a variety of reasons.
