What’s on Your Face?

By on September 29, 2016

Would you believe me if I told you that you may be using skin care products that are harmful to your health? Unlike the U.S., Canada and Europe have bans and restrictions on certain chemicals likely to cause harm. So it’s up to you to know what’s in the products you put on your skin.

According to a study conducted by Chemical Safe Skincare Research in 2006, the average man absorbs more than 4 pounds of toxins from his bath, body, and skin care products every year.  Chemicals are easily absorbed through the skin, and once they are absorbed, the body has no effective way to get rid of those toxins, in some cases toxins may remain in your body for years.

The following is a list of four ingredients Solo Noir refuses to allow into our products:

  • Sodium Lauryl and sodium Laureth Sulfate
    • Sodium Lauryl and Soduim Laureth Sulfate are commonly referred to as “SLS” and are the chemicals used in body care products (facial cleansers, liquid soaps, shampoos, bubble baths, etc.)  to create a lather. Some SLS also contain low levels of 1,4-Dioxane which is a probable  human carcinogen. The FDA encourages manufacturers to remove 1,4-dioxane, though it is not required by federal law.
  • Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
    • BHAs are used in skin care products, but it is also frequently used in food and food packaging!  BHAs can cause hyperpigmentation, have a negative effect on the levels of thyroid hormones in the body, have the potential to interfere with reproductive development and the products of reproductive hormones, and cause liver damage and stomach cancers.
  • Parabens
    • Parabens are a commonly used preservative which are commonly listed on labels preceded by Ethyl-, Methyl-, Propyl-, Isopropyl-, Butyl-, or as Isobutylparabens. The use of parabens is the suspected reason (along with the hormones used in meat production) that little girls are menstruating at extremely young ages. Parabens are also suspected of causing lowered sperm counts in men.
  • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
    • Polyethylene Glycol has many different uses in cosmetics and is commonly found in cleansers, lotions, creams, lip balms, shaving creams, body washes, shampoos, oral pain gels, bar soap, baby wipes, contact lens solution, eye drops, toothpaste, hair care products, etc. Heavy metal contamination is known to cause neurological, autoimmune and kidney issues.

There In contrast there are ingredients that are good for your skin. Always check the labels to see what ingredients are in your products. Look for products that contain:

  • Shea ButterShea butter is a natural, non-toxic way to moisturize your skin it is ideal for dry cracking skin especially on the elbows, heels, knees and foot.  It helps with skin  elasticity, minimizes stretch marks, and helps reduce razor bumps and rashes.
  • Aloe Vera– Aloe is a great product to use because it has wound healing abilities and is beneficial in treating thing such as first and second degree burns and psoriasis.  Aloe Vera can also help counteract the effects of UVA rays.
  • Vitamins– vitamins such as Vitamin A and Vitamin E are a great way to keep your skin looking healthy. These vitamins can stimulate collagen and elastin (which is what helps keep your skin looking young and wrinkle free). Vitamin E can reduce water loss from your skin and strengthens the skin’s barrier function. Vitamin A can help reduce acne and can protect skin from free radical damage.
